Two Dollare Scrip

The $2 Howell Works scrip, dated 25 May 1829 and numbered 18645. While signed James P. Allaire, the signature is not that of Allaire. The signature below is an actual one of James Allaire's taken from one of his letters to his second wife Calicia Allaire Tompkins. The differences between the two are quite distinct. Records do indicate that Allaire's brother Alexander P. Allaire, who held managerial positions at the Howell Works form time to time, was authorized to sign the script and it is possible the signature on the scrip is his.
